Approaches to Machine Learning at the IoT Edge Register for this session ▸ Here With the mainstreaming of IoT, connected devices, and sensors, data is being generated at a phenomenal rate, particularly at the edge of the network. IDC's FutureScape for IoT report found that by 2019, 40% of IoT data will be stored, processed, analyzed and acted upon at the edge of the network where it is created.  Why at the edge? Turns out that sensor data, in most cases, is perishable. Its value is realized within a narrow window after its creation. Further, analytics at the edge provides other benefits including: Reduced Cloud Costs Local Reaction Increased System Scalability Reduced Data to be Analyzed Bandwidth and Network Resiliency This presentation examines current architectural approaches to analytics at the edge, including IoT devices, sensors, network communications with edge... AI, Globalization and International Basketball | @ExpoDX @Schmarzo #AI #IoT

A strong declaration from a historically antagonist foe should put chills in the hearts of Americans preparing themselves for the world ahead: Russian President Vladimir Putin says the nation that leads in AI will be the ruler of the world [1]” … The ruler of the world! From the article (with some modification to avoid political landmines), we get the following: “The development of artificial intelligence has increasingly become a national security concern in recent years. It is China and the US (not Russia), which are seen as the two frontrunners, with China recently announcing its ambition to become the global leader in AI research by 2030. Many analysts warn that America is in danger of falling behind, especially as the [current US] administration prepares to cut funding for basic science and technology research.” Elon Musk, one of America’s foremost technology... [session] #IoT's “Smart” Sea Change | @ThingsExpo @JohnCrupi #AI #M2M

The "Smart" Sea Change in IoT Now that the world has connected "things," we need to build these devices as truly intelligent in order to create instantaneous and precise results. This means you have to do as much of the processing at the point of entry as you can: at the edge. The killer use cases for IoT are becoming manifest through AI engines on edge devices. An autonomous car has this dual edge/cloud analytics model, producing precise, real-time results. In his session at @ThingsExpo, John Crupi, Vice President and Engineering System Architect at Greenwave Systems, will discuss how as more smart, AI-enabled "things" operate at the edges of our networks, we'll see things moving beyond being connected and into actively embodying intelligence. Speaker Bio John Crupi is Vice President and Engineering System Architect at Greenwave Systems, where he guides development... (more)

Oracle vs SAP: IP Theft Allegation Case To Go To Speedy Mediation

Oracle's claim that SAP collated its software illegally through downloads has resulted in the German software giant asking a US court to order appoint a mediator so that settlement talks can commence immediately. The papers were filed with the US District Court for the Northern District of California yesterday. In the case, launched in March, Oracle accuses SAP's US support subsidiary, TomorrowNow, of  "corporate theft on a grand scale." Oracle alleges fraud as well as copyright infringement. SAP's riposte? Simply "That is not a matter of 'corporate theft on a grand scale,' as Oracle says in its complaint, but a matter of contract interpretation." SAP believes that it is "in the interests of all concerned, including customers, for this case to be resolved promptly so that the parties and their customers may focus on their ongoing businesses and continued innovation, ... Sun-IBM Watch

The folks at the Wall Street Journal who brought us tales of IBM buying Sun for $6.5 billion-$8 billion last week were saying by Friday that due diligence was holding up any announcement. The paper seemed to think that IBM lawyers were paying particular attention to Sun's many different IP licenses and formal agreements, including that 2004 antitrust deal with Microsoft that proved such a financial windfall for Sun. It got a patent cross-license out of it too. Perhaps they're weighing whether Sun really had the right to open source Solaris. That was a mare's nest. Reuters agreed with the Journal that any deal could take "several more days as IBM studies various parts of Sun's computer server and software business." Nobody's sure how many days it will take. Everybody's sources dismissed the notion that IBM's due diligence was anything more than standard fare. The Journal, ... (more)

Something You May Not See Everyday!

As part of the continuing on the road theme and series, this post is being done while traveling for this weeks adventures and events including stops in Atlanta, St. Louis and wrapping up the week in Minneapolis at the local CMG quarterly meeting event. At both last weeks events in Las Vegas and Milwaukee as well as this weeks events talking with IT professionals from various organizations, a consistent theme is that there is no data or I/O recession, however there is the need to do more with less while enabling business sustainability. While VMware remains the dominant server virtualization platform, I'm hearing of more organizations using Citrix or other Xensource based technologies along with some Microsoft HyperV adopters in part to leverage lower cost of ownership compared to VMware in instances where not all of the feature functionality of the robust VMware te... To Err is Human…

#devops Automating incomplete or ineffective processes will only enable you to make mistakes faster – and more often. Most folks probably remember the play on "to err is human…" proverb when computers first began to take over, well, everything. The saying was only partially tongue-in-cheek, because as we've long since learned the reality is that computers allow us to make mistakes faster and more often and with greater reach. One of the statistics used to justify a devops initiative is the rate at which human error contributes to a variety of operational badness: downtime, performance, and deployment life-cycle time.  Human error is a non-trivial cause of downtime and other operational interruptions. A recent Paragon Software survey found that human error was cited as a cause of downtime by 13.2% of respondents. Other surveys have indicated rates much higher. Gartn... (more)

Machine learning has taken residence at our cities' cores and now we can finally have "smart cities." Cities are a collection of buildings made to provide the structure and safety necessary for people to function, create and survive. Buildings are a pool of ever-changing performance data from large automated systems such as heating and cooling to the people that live and work within them. Through machine learning, buildings can optimize performance, reduce costs, and improve occupant comfort by ...

IoT is rapidly becoming mainstream as more and more investments are made into the platforms and technology. As this movement continues to expand and gain momentum it creates a massive wall of noise that can be difficult to sift through. Unfortunately, this inevitably makes IoT less approachable for people to get started with and can hamper efforts to integrate this key technology into your own portfolio. There are so many connected products already in place today with many hundreds more on the h...
