ANDICOM 2009 Is Revving Its Engines, the Date to Go By for the ICT Industry in the Region

Only 8 days away from it all happening and with more than 70 International lecturers confirmed, 100 companies, and more than 2,700 attendees, the date to go by in the Information and Communication Technology Industry (ICT) is revving its engines: The Telecommunications Conference ANDICOM 2009, which has reached its 24th Edition.

For three days, from October 28 to 30, Cartagena de Indias will become the center for the ICT Industry in the region, and will allow you to see the latest trends that mark the course of this ever growing industry. In fact, the theme of ANDICOM 2009 will revolve around Times of CHANGE… Times of OPPORTUNITY, which coincides with the issues that are affecting the development of the industry and that will be dealt with by national and international experts at the Academic Central Forum through the various sections: Policy and Regulation; Digital Media Business: Content and services; Mobiles; Beyond Broadband; and U-Life. Throughout the 24 years of this Conference, CINTEL has managed to bring forward great visionaries in the development of ICT, to get a glimpse of possible strategic partners at an international level, to generate synergies between different players and sectors to achieve mainstreaming of ICT as well as gather the government, the academy, and the industry together under one roof.

For these reasons, it is recognized as the main regional event in the ICT industry. Since 1995, it has brought more than 20 thousand visitors from the five continents to the “Heroic Capital” and for the second time it welcomes France as the Guest of Honor.

Academic Forum: State of the Art of the Industry
Wednesday, October 28

The ANDICOM Conference starts Wednesday, October 28 with the Policy and Regulation section. The Opening Ceremony will be performed by the Minister of Information and Communication Technologies, María del Rosario Guerra. Immediately after that, the lecture by François Rancy, Director of the National Agency of ANF Frequencies, from France; and the panel of presidential candidates “Proposal to promote the economic and social development of Colombia through the ICT,” which will be moderated by Felipe Aldunate, Director of America Economy, and José Carlos García, Deputy Editor of Technology of The Times.

In the afternoon, the panel “Competitive Collaboration model for the development of the ICT Industry” will be held, which will rely on the participation of the Ministries of ICT and Commerce, Industry, and Tourism; Colciencias, the French competitive poles Minatech and Images and Networks, the SENA and the moderation of the President of the Private Council of Competitiveness, Hernando José Gómez.

Also, the conferences on “Regulatory environment in the frame of the ICT law,” by the Regulatory Commission for Communications (CRC) and “Control and supervision environment in the frame of the legal reform as for competition and protection of users” by the Office for the Control of Industry and Commerce.

The opening day also includes the Workshops “Communications for security,” “Trends in use and management of the spectrum” and “Satellites: Applications and new services.”

Thursday, October 29

This day is for the sections on Mobiles, U-LIFE, and Content and Services. Mobiles starts with “Trends in Mobile Services in Latin America,” by 3G Americas; and the participation of the Mobile Operators TIGO, Comcel, Telecom Personal; RIM-Blackberry. Broadband starts with a debate on the future of fixed and mobile broadband, with Analysys Manson as advisor; mobile broadband with LTE (Ericcson); Evolution of mobile financial services (Gemalto and Redeban Multicolor), where is mobility headed (Microsoft) and MS (Sony Ericsson).

Also, U-LIFE, technology for well being… viable and profitable will have lecturers from entities and companies such as RENATA, Juniper Networks, Alcatel-Lucent, Telecom ParisTech Institute, Government online, Promethean, Ministry of National Education, University of Manitoba, with topics such as cloud computing, eco-sustainable communications, government online, internet of the future, e-learning, among others.

Also, the panel “Promotion of Info-development in Latin America” will be developed with the participation of the UIT, OEA/CITEL, World Bank, European Commission, and the moderation of the Director of the National Planning Department (DNP), Esteban Piedrahíta.

For, Content and Services, Thursday, October 29, there will be two sessions. The first one is “Digital Content: Business Opportunities on the rise,” which will have the participation of the Ministry of Economy, Industry, and Employment in France; TDF Short Waves, from France; SundComm Sunnyvale from California (United States); HP and Optenet.

The second session will broach the subject of “Exploration of the new scene of content and services,” where Google, Antena 3, from Spain; the Director of Technology of Barack Obama’s campaign; Daga and the Colombian Chamber of Duty Free areas of the Andean Region will participate.

Thursday, the European Cooperation Day SALA+ will also take place.

Friday, October 30

E section for Content and Services will continue Friday with the session “Challenges of the regulation of content,” starting with the conference on “Trends in the self-regulation of content,” by the Association for the Self-regulation of Commercial Communication, from Spain, followed by the panel “Regulation of Content: Why and how to regulate?” where the Managers of the National Television Commission (CNTV), from TVPC, Asomedios, Autocontrol, Top Council of Audiovisual (CSA), TAPLAT, Brigard, and Urrutia will participate, with the moderation of Ximena Tapias, President of the UCEP.

In the Broadband section, new vision, the different operators will have their space to talk about the subject. In the talks, the Presidents of ETB, Telefónica-Telecom, Telmex, Internexa, UNE, and the Deputy Minister of Information and Communication Technologies, Daniel Medina will be present. These talks will be moderated by Orlando Rojas, Editor of Evaluamos.com.

The closing of ANDICOM 2009 will be done by the President of the Republic, Álvaro Uribe Vélez.
