Reflections on a First Month at Xiotech

Wow, a month went by pretty quickly. Along the way, I racked up some decent air miles, got to know more of the team in Minnesota, had terrific conversations with some of our customers and partners, spun up some lead-gen activities and challenged a bunch of my going-in assumptions.

Some observations and thoughts, in no particular order:

  • I completely underestimated the power of a 5-year warranty, particularly in today’s world when asset refreshes have been delayed and IT managers are facing some monster “out year” maintenance payments on the horizon.
  • We’re going to change the company’s technology-oriented messaging in the coming weeks and months. We have a great value proposition (profound energy savings, improving performance within data-intensive applications, material OpEx savings from a 5-year warranty, etc.) but the messages are easily lost in the speeds and feeds.
  • We’re not yet capitalizing (enough) on our open web services management layer, so we’re planning something pretty interesting for early next year. Stay tuned for some previews in mid-Q1. In the meantime, I’d love to hear from our partners and customers about what apps and/or widgets they’ve written.
  • I’m hearing more and more people talk about VDI. Seems like 2010 might be the beginning of the next wave of virtualization value, assuming storage is able to keep pace (see Jim McDonald’s piece on why storage needs to think differently).
  • I’m grateful for the passionate and thoughtful discussions I’ve had with some our customers. They have great insights that we will build on as we evolve our roadmap. I’m eager to continue the dialogue in the New Year.
  • Anyone planning a private cloud implementation for 2010 should schedule a briefing on ISE. Scale-out storage building blocks with screaming performance and self-healing drives are exactly what your business case needs.
  • For those who’ve not visited Colorado Springs, Steve Sicola makes a mean chili.

Big things planned for the New Year – we’ll be blogging from our sales and partner events in Vegas in a few weeks.

Until then, Happy Holidays.
