It's unclear what SAP's worried about - having been royally trashed by Oracle and ordered to pay a landmark $1.3 billion in copyright infringement penalties for the wholesale looting of Oracle IP - but the German software company has licensed Intellectual Ventures' patent portfolio of 30,000 patents "for defensive use" apparently like the deals IV cut recently with Samsung and HTC, which Apple is suing. Terms were not disclosed. Intellectual Ventures is the usually quiet patent-acquiring outfit put together by ex-Microsoft biggie Nathan Myhrvold. Late last week a Texas judge set aside a jury verdict ordering SAP to pay Versata $138.6 million for patent infringement. There will be a new trial on damages.
