Amazon EC2 customers who have purchased more EC2 reserved instances than they need can now sell those instances to other EC2 customers in Amazon’s new marketplace, according to this GigaOM article. The reserved instances are purchased with 1 to 3 year commitments and this new marketplace now offers customers a way to sell their unused instances when demand changes. In this GigaOM blog, Dr. James Mitchell details his beta test of the new marketplace.

Lenovo, the world’s second largest PC maker, has purchased cloud computing software company Stoneware, according to The Seattle Times article. Stoneware, which has cloud solutions for the government and education industry, will help Lenovo connect its smartphones, tablets, and PCs.

Gartner predicts that the worldwide public cloud computing services market will grow 19.6% this year, according to The Economic Times article. The global market is expected to reach $109 billion, led by the Infrastructure-as-a-Service market which will grow 45.4% this year.

CA Technologies announced a new version of CA Infrastructure Management, according to this ZDNet article. The management software collects performance data and offers user-specific views of the system through a single dashboard. The software integrates CA Technologies recent application acquisitions, such as Nimsoft and NetQoS.

Accelerating Public Cloud Access

A funny thing happened to Winged Media, a three-year-old Australian firm, on the way to building out its global service offering over the public cloud — in this case Amazon’s S3 data storage service. The company, which provides platform-based marketing solutions for Internet-domain investors, wanted to launch a cloud-based Internet-domain auction service, but in a trial, Winged Media encountered very slow global access to the data.
Some quick analysis revealed that the customers suffering the slow response times were incurring data latency — that is, sluggish response resulting from their great distance from the content. The problem was critical for Winged Media to solve because it affected the company’s Protrada Domain Exchange, an auction site on which expiring, or back-order, domains from different sources go up for bid. Winged Media needed to be certain it could update and synchronize its servers around the world for its global customer base or its flagship service wouldn’t fly.
