WatchGuard Shares Security Best Practices for Real-World Threats at Gartner Symposium ITxpo

Three Theater Sessions Open to All Attendees Oct. 22-24

SEATTLE, Oct. 9, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Security experts from WatchGuard Technologies and NCR will present three sessions on security challenges and best practices at the Gartner Symposium ITxpo in Orlando. The session topics will range from achieving PCI compliance to securing virtual networks and an overview of baseline tactics for eliminating the majority of security breaches using tools most businesses already have.

WatchGuard speakers will include Dave Taylor, vice president of corporate strategy, who will discuss the dangers of firewall misconfiguration and Corey Nachreiner, director of security strategy, who will present best practices for keeping networks secure when working in the cloud and an ever changing virtual space. A session will also be presented by a WatchGuard customer, Erika Thomas, product management director at NCR, who will discuss the management of manifold PCI DSS-compliant networks and best practices in making PCI manageable across multi-thousand, large-scale deployments.

Symposium attendees will also be able to stop by WatchGuard's booth (#544) to preview new WatchGuard solutions designed to enhance efficiencies in security appliance configuration and deployment. WatchGuard team members will share how the new capability will enable rapid deployment and significantly reduce total cost of ownership for any organization or solution provider supporting multiple sites.

WHEN: Sunday, October 21-25, 2012 at the Walt Disney World Dolphin Hotel in Orlando

WHAT: WatchGuard Sessions include:

WHO: Dave Taylor, VP of Corporate Strategy at WatchGuard has been successfully building high tech businesses for more than 20 years. Prior to WatchGuard, Taylor co-founded Sparxent, a rollup of value-added service providers in the mid-market space, which grew to over $50M of annualized revenue within 2 years. Before Sparxent, Taylor was a part of Intel Corporation's first branded business with the launch of Intel branded processors, networking products, and memory cards. As part of the team that launched Intel's LANDesk business, Taylor grew the European region to 32% of worldwide revenue within 5 years. In 2002, Taylor helped spin LANDesk out of Intel into a privately held company. Over the next four years, LANDesk grew over 30% per year and was eventually sold in 2006.

Corey Nachreiner, Director of Security Strategy at WatchGuard has been with WatchGuard since 1999 and has since written more than a thousand concise security alerts and easily-understood educational articles for WatchGuard users. His security training videos have generated hundreds of letters of praise from thankful customers and accumulated more than 100,000 views on YouTube and Google Video. A Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP), Corey speaks internationally and is often quoted by other online sources, including C|NET, eWeek, and Slashdot. Corey enjoys "modding" any technical gizmo he can get his hands on, and considers himself a hacker in the old sense of the word.

Erika Thomas, Product Management Director for the Command Center, Secure Access, and Network and Security Services (NSS) solutions at NCR Corporation, drives customer adoption, retention, and satisfaction with products that enable and support business continuity. In her more than 12 years at NCR, some of her most successful ventures have been leading a technical support team to the greatest customer satisfaction increase of a single department, bringing several successful products to market, and helping recruit, challenge and mentor many talented individuals. Prior to joining NCR, she had successful ventures in both the technical support and hospitality industries.

The annual Gartner Symposium brings together IT industry leaders to assess the growth and impact of changes in the field.

While the focus and objectives of IoT initiatives are many and diverse, they all share a few common attributes, and one of those is the network. The Jevons Paradox suggests that when technological advances increase efficiency of a resource, it results in an overall increase in consumption. Writing on the increased use of coal as a result of technological improvements, 19th-century economist William Stanley Jevons found that these improvements led to the development of new ways to utilize coal. In his session at 19th Cloud Expo, Mark Thiele, Chief Strategy Officer for Apcera, compared the Jevons Paradox to modern-day enterprise IT, examin...
