PALO ALTO, CA -- (Marketwire) -- 11/05/12 -- The Anita Borg Institute (ABI), a non-profit organization focused on the advancement of women in the high-tech industry, today announced two new Board of Trustees members, Marie Wieck, General Manager of Application Integration Middleware (AIM) at IBM, and Peter Griffiths, Executive Vice President and Group Executive of Enterprise Solutions and Technology Group at CA Technologies. As members of ABI's Board of Trustees, Wieck and Griffiths will help ABI promote the recruitment, retention, and advancement of women in technology. They join a board of esteemed members including executives, academics, and students from leading technology companies and academic institutions.
"ABI succeeds because of the combined knowledge, vision and commitment of technology leaders like Marie Wieck and Peter Griffiths," said Telle Whitney, ABI's president and CEO. "We know that businesses with diverse teams that include both women and men deliver more innovation and better business results in today's global business environment. We are committed to attracting more women to the highly rewarding and growing number of careers in computer science and engineering. Peter and Marie's direct involvement in our Board will help us continue to advance a new generation of women in technology."
As General Manager of AIM, Marie Wieck has responsibility for IBM's WebSphere software portfolio. She leads a worldwide team helping enterprise clients achieve business advantage from mobile, web, cloud, integration and business process management solutions. She has over 25 years of IT experience in hardware, software and services. IBM has demonstrated decades of commitment to addressing the specific needs of women, and to creating work/life and career development programs that address those needs. The use of these services leads to more effective and productive employees who will contribute their best to the corporation.
Wieck is passionate about women in technology and work/life integration. She is a member of the Society of Women Engineers (SWE), the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), the National Association of Female Executives (NAFE) Roundtable, MentorNet, and the co-chairperson of IBM's Global Work/Life Council. She won the SWE Work/Life Balance Award in 2005 and the President's Citation from The Cooper Union for her contributions to technology. Wieck holds an M.B.A. from New York University, an M.S. in Computer Science from Columbia University, and a B.S. in Engineering from The Cooper Union.
"It is a privilege to serve on the Board of Trustees for the Anita Borg Institute," said Wieck. "IBM recognizes the importance that a women's perspective brings to technology innovation, and programs like the Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing and the Systers community help recruit and promote women in technical career paths. I look forward to contributing to these initiatives and working closely with this great team."
In addition to Wieck, ABI also appointed Peter Griffiths to its Board of Trustees. As a Group
Executive at CA Technologies, Peter Griffiths manages a broad portfolio of products and solutions for enterprise and growth markets. He oversees a world-class global community that combines research, development, product management and solutions engineering to drive company leadership in Security, Enterprise Management, and IT Management-as-a-Service. Griffiths is an advocate for women in the technology industry and has worked closely with ABI to help further programs for women in the field. Griffiths earned a Bachelor of Science degree in electrical and electronic engineering from Brighton University in England.
"Greater involvement of women in technology is an incredibly important factor in driving growth and development in the IT industry and society at large. This is not just an issue for women, but something that requires engagement from everyone -- at all levels," said Griffiths. "At CA Technologies, we are committed to the advancement of women in technology. As one of the newest members on the Anita Borg Institute's Board, I hope to further their mission of helping expand opportunities for women in this industry."
