Preventice, a developer of mobile health solutions and remote monitoring systems, has quickly established itself as a leader in the mobile health technology market with the introduction of more than 50 applications and the recent clearance from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to market its BodyGuardian Remote Monitoring System™ (BodyGuardian RMS), which was recently named one of the "10 Wearable Devices to Watch" by InformationWeek.
"Preventice is well positioned to become a major player in the emerging mobile health technology category. We have selected Doug because of his proven track record of growing small companies into billion dollar category leaders," said Jon Otterstatter, co-founder, president and CEO of Preventice. "Doug was an early advocate for Preventice, along with the entire team at Arthur Ventures, and we are pleased to have him take on a more significant role in ensuring our continued success."
Burgum is a well-known entrepreneur and philanthropist who holds numerous board appointments including executive chairman of the board of Intelligent InSites, chairman of the board and an investor of Atlassian, and founder and chairman of Kilbourne Group. In addition, Burgum was a board member and investor of SuccessFactors from October 2007 to February 2012, and he served as chairman of the board from June 2010 to February 2012 when SAP acquired SuccessFactors for $3.7 billion.
A graduate of North Dakota State University (NDSU) and Stanford University Graduate School of Business (MBA), Burgum worked at the Chicago office of McKinsey & Co., until 1983, when he returned to his native North Dakota and literally "bet the farm" to create the seed capital for Great Plains Software, Inc., then a very small start-up company in the fledgling PC software industry. Driven by a strong vision and powerful dream, he led Great Plains to a worldwide presence and to its successful initial public offering in 1997. Microsoft Corporation acquired the company in 2001 for $1.1 billion. From April 2001 to August 2007, Burgum served as senior vice president at Microsoft Corporation.
Burgum has received honorary doctorate degrees from NDSU (2000) and the University of Mary (2006). In 2012, he joined the advisory board of the Jeffrey S. Raikes School of Computer Science and Management at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. The Raikes School is a specialized honors program that focuses on computer science and management. In 2009, then-North Dakota Governor John Hoeven presented Burgum with the state's highest honor, the Theodore Roosevelt Rough Rider Award. Burgum's philanthropic efforts focus on youth, education, and the arts.
Founded in 2007 and headquartered in Minneapolis, Preventice also has offices in Rochester, Minn. and Fargo, N.D. According to Otterstatter, the company has realized year-over-year revenue growth fueled by its unique business model, which emphasizes strategic relationships with global innovation partners and its ability to develop applications that target real-life clinical needs.
