SSAE 16 Overview
In January 2010 the Auditing Standards Board of the AICPA finalized the Statement on Standards for Attestation Engagements No. 16 ("SSAE 16"), Reporting on Controls at a Service Organization. As of June 15, 2011, the SSAE 16 effectively replaced the SAS 70 Level II audit ("SAS 70") as the authoritative guide for reporting on service organizations. SSAE 16 also introduced new reporting requirements for service organizations that reflect an improved alignment with the international audit standard, ISAE 3402.
Similar to SAS 70, SSAE 16 provides a thorough report on controls related to security, availability, confidentiality, processing integrity, and privacy. In addition, however, SSAE 16 integrates a new attest standard, which requires the auditor's report to include the hosting company management's written description ("attestation") of the design and operating effectiveness of the internal controls to be audited and the suitable criteria used for its assessment.
Service Auditor's Reports
Today's global economy mandates that service organizations demonstrate they have adequate controls and safeguards in place when they host or process data belonging to their clients. One of the most effective ways a service organization can provide tangible proof that they have met this mandate is through a Service Auditor's Report demonstrating compliance. And for 10 consecutive years Core Services has done just that by achieving annual compliance with the rigorous SAS 70 and, beginning in 2011, the SSAE 16, Type II audit requirements.
Like the SAS 70 audit reports before them, the SSAE 16 audit reports come in two types, Type I and Type II. Type I reports document the independent auditors' opinion regarding the design of controls as of a set date. Type II reports go further and provide more dynamic analyses by auditing the effectiveness of the Type I criteria over a minimum six-month period. Core Services' SSAE 16 Type II positive report assures its clients and potential clients of Core Services' commitment to provide the highest level of controls and safeguards.
"At Core Services we provide comprehensive managed data center services, and the SSAE 16 audit takes an in-depth look at how we handle and control the security and infrastructure of our clients' environments," explains Jim Bistis, President and CEO of Core Services. Bistis continues, "This includes the management and monitoring of information systems for reliability, handling of database and applications security, and infrastructure change management. With 10 consecutive years of successful certification after rigorous review, Core Services has time and time again demonstrated our strict adherence to the audit standard guidelines, ensuring the security of our clients' data."
