Silver Peak Systems today released the fourth installment in a six-part video series that features Silver Peak founder and CTO, David Hughes, looking ahead into the key information technology (IT) trends for 2013. In this video, Hughes highlights how the wide area network (WAN) bottleneck is persisting due to data and Internet traffic growth.

“The increase in traffic, whether it be the amount of storage being deployed, the uptake of replicating storage data, or if you just look at the growth of traffic on the Internet, it’s staggering,” said Hughes. “There is a worse WAN bottleneck today than there was 10 years ago.”

Hughes goes on to note that the WAN performance problems today are not necessarily related to bandwidth, but more about latency (distance) and network quality.

Each video in the series examines areas of IT and networking that Hughes feels will be accentuated during the coming year. The first video in the series featured Hughes’ thoughts on the hype and reality of software defined networking (SDN), the second video focused on how virtualization is redefining IT, and the third looked at offsite data replication becoming mainstream.
