Emerald Isle firms rank among nation's fastest-growing companies for second consecutive year

Transportation Impact, First Flight Solutions rank among top 750 on Inc. 5000

EMERALD ISLE, N.C., Aug. 22, 2014 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- Emerald Isle-based parcel spend management firms, Transportation Impact and First Flight Solutions, have found themselves on the Inc. 5000 list of America's fastest-growing private companies for the second consecutive year.

Transportation Impact grew 627 percent during the most recent 3-year period, generating $7 million in revenue in 2013, to rank No. 728. First Flight Solutions, of which Transportation Impact is majority owner, grew 649 percent during that same period, grossing $4.2 million, good for No. 699.

The accolades mark yet another milestone for each of the two firms, which began as small startups in 2008 and have since grown into two of the most formidable organizations in the logistics and supply chain industry. Both companies specialize in helping high-volume FedEx and UPS parcel shippers save money through parcel negotiation and auditing services. To date, the companies have helped more than 400 clients save a total of over $50 million.

"When we started Transportation Impact, we envisioned this type of success," said Keith Byrd, co-founder, principal partner and CEO. "Having said that, I think everyone sets the bar high when they first start out; no one starts a business and says, 'I just want to be average.'

"Having watched our company continue to reach its potential, though, is something I don't think any of us could have fully understood or appreciated until now, when we've had the chance to actually experience it. I'll be the first to tell you that the success and recognition we have received is a direct reflection of each and every member within our organization and of the tremendous support we have all received from our community."

For Transportation Impact, the national Inc. 5000 honor comes on the heels of statewide recognition from North Carolina Governor Pat McCrory, who named TI the recipient of the 2014 Governor's Award for Excellence in Workforce Development as an "Outstanding Employer" on July 23. As recently as last week, the company was ranked among the top five corporate citizens by The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Government, joining the ranks of Lowe's, Harris Teeter, ettain group, Alston & Bird, SAS, The Fresh Market, Inc. and Sealy Corporation.

"We are proud of what we have been able to accomplish as a company, and very proud of our people," said Travis Burt, co-founder and principal partner of Transportation Impact and CEO of First Flight Solutions. "While we have obviously worked hard to grow our business, we have also tried not to lose focus on the bigger picture of corporate and civic responsibility. As a business owner, it's nice to see the company reach its goals and aspirations, but it's equally rewarding to know that we're going about it the right way. Doing so has allowed us to build some great relationships and lasting friendships along the way."

To qualify for the 2014 Inc. 500|5000, a company must be privately-owned, based in the United States and independent. In addition, a company must have started earning revenue by March 31, 2010, had revenue no less than $100,000 in 2010, had revenue no less than $2,000,000 in 2013, and its revenue in 2013 must have exceeded its revenue in 2010, according to Inc.com.

Since expanding the list from 500 companies to 5000 in 2007, just 3,129 have made the list more than once.

"The average company on the list grew a mind-boggling 516 percent," said Inc. Magazine President and Editor in Chief Eric Schurenberg in a letter to the two companies. "As an Inc. 5000 honoree Transportation Impact and First Flight Solutions now share a pedigree with Intuit, Zappos, Under Armour, Microsoft, Jamba Juice, Timberland, Clif Bar, Pandora, Patagonia, Oracle and other notable alumni."

In addition to Transportation Impact and First Flight Solutions, the 2014 list added such powerhouses as GoPro, Bridger, Fuhu, Tough Mudder, Bowlmor and Lending Club, according to the statement.

Transportation Impact ranked as the 12th fastest-growing logistics and transportation company in the nation, while First Flight Solutions finished 10th. The two ranked 17th and 16th in North Carolina, respectively, and were the top two in the industry statewide for the second consecutive year.

Each company outpaced the industry average for revenue growth by more than 500 percent.

When shopping for a new data processing platform for IoT solutions, many development teams want to be able to test-drive options before making a choice. Yet when evaluating an IoT solution, it’s simply not feasible to do so at scale with physical devices. Building a sensor simulator is the next best choice; however, generating a realistic simulation at very high TPS with ease of configurability is a formidable challenge. When dealing with multiple application or transport protocols, you would be...
Smart cities have the potential to change our lives at so many levels for citizens: less pollution, reduced parking obstacles, better health, education and more energy savings. Real-time data streaming and the Internet of Things (IoT) possess the power to turn this vision into a reality. We are given a desktop platform with Java 8 or Java 9 installed and seek to find a way to deploy high-performance Java applications that use Java 3D and/or Jogl without having to run an installer. We are subject to the constraint that the applications be signed and deployed so that they can be run in a trusted environment (i.e., outside of the sandbox). Further, we seek to do this in a way that does not depend on bundling a JRE with our applications, as this makes downloads and installations rat...

In this strange new world where more and more power is drawn from business technology, companies are effectively straddling two paths on the road to innovation and transformation into digital enterprises. The first path is the heritage trail – with “legacy” technology forming the background. Here, extant technologies are transformed by core IT teams to provide more API-driven approaches. Legacy systems can restrict companies that are transitioning into digital enterprises. To truly become a lead...
Digital Transformation (DX) is not a "one-size-fits all" strategy. Each organization needs to develop its own unique, long-term DX plan. It must do so by realizing that we now live in a data-driven age, and that technologies such as Cloud Computing, Big Data, the IoT, Cognitive Computing, and Blockchain are only tools. The IoT Will Grow: In what might be the most obvious prediction of the decade, the IoT will continue to expand next year, with more and more devices coming online every single day. What isn’t so obvious about this prediction: where that growth will occur. The retail, healthcare, and industrial/supply chain industries will likely see the greatest growth. Forrester Research has predicted the IoT will become “the backbone” of customer value as it continues to grow. It is no surprise that retail is ...
